Obituary for Betty Bailey McCauley

Betty Bailey McCauley, 75, of Lapeer died Wednesday, January 10, 2018 in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family.

Betty was born March 21, 1942 in Hazard, Kentucky to Odem & Emma (Whitaker) Bailey. Betty grew up in Wyandotte, Michigan where she graduated from Roosevelt High School, class of 1960. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University. Years later Betty would earn her master’s degree from Central Michigan University. Betty began her career in education teaching in the Detroit and Utica Public School Districts. Upon moving to Lapeer in 1975 Betty worked at the Noah’s Ark Preschool and was integral in starting a corporate daycare for the local McDonald’s restaurant. The McCauleys and Gentschs also owned and operated the “Dough & Deli” in Lapeer for several years. In 1989 Betty became the director of Kid’s & Company - Lapeer Community School District’s daycare program. In 1996, Betty co-founded The Chatfield School and was the co-director until she retired in 2012. “Retirement” from Chatfield meant Betty would take on more responsibilities elsewhere including being named the superintendent of Choice Schools and remaining a board member at Chatfield until her death. Outside of work Betty loved gardening, music, the arts, travel, anything to do with nature and her family. Betty’s passionate attention to detail in every aspect of her life was perfectly exemplified during the Christmas holiday – her home at Christmas was often referred to as “magical”. Above all, Betty loved her girls and her grandbabies.

Betty is survived by her husband, Louis Preston; two daughters: Amy McCauley of Brighton and Emily (Michael) McCauley Billings of Howell; four grandchildren: Mac, Joshua, Josephine and Benjamin; sisters: Kathy (Stuart) Rotenberg of West Bloomfield and Debra (Michael) Honeywell of Westland. Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Sue Morrison and her parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Willows at Chatfield School, 231 Lake Drive, Lapeer, Michigan 48446.

A memorial service honoring Betty is being planned and will be announced in the very near future. Details will be posted on Muir Brothers’ website as soon as the memorial is finalized. In keeping with Betty’s wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer.
