Obituary for Fred Glenn Church

Fred Glenn Church, age 71, of Metamora/Thornville, died Thursday February 22, 2018. He was born July 29, 1946 in Almont, to Glenn and Florence (Thiemkey) Church.

Fred graduated from Dryden High School in 1964 and married Patty Jo Upleger on September 4, 1971 in Imlay City. He worked over 26 years for Trayco in Lapeer (Masco Bath), as a maintenance electrician, retiring in 2007. Mr. Church was an active member of the Lapeer Masonic Lodge #54 and the Metamora Masonic Lodge #210. He was Past Master and a lifetime member of the Metamora Lodge (Blue Lodge). Fred had been through the degrees of the Holy Royal Arch and the Knights of Templar, the Masonic fraternity uses the honorary title of “Knights Templar” for its highest 33rd degree of initiation. Mr. Church was the sexton of Thornville Cemetery for many years, the unofficial “Mayor of Thornville” and Thornville’s “Town Historian”. Fred enjoyed reading, woodworking, talking, “flirting with the ladies” and communicating on ham radio. Mr. Church’s call sign on ham radio was “ABR”, America’s Biggest Rascal.

Fred is survived by his wife: Patty Jo Church of Metamora/Thornville; children: Eric Church of Flint, Heidi (Philip) Woodcox of Burton and Amanda (Nick) Buck of Davison; and granddaughters: Alaura Woodcox of Burton and Caitlyn Buck of Davison. He was preceded in death by his parents: Glenn and Florence Church and sister: Alicia Whitehead.

In accordance with Mr. Church’s wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer. No formal funeral service will take place. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Condolences and memories may be shared at
