Obituary for Leo Albert Winey

Leo Albert Winey, 91, of Lapeer (formerly of Redford Township and Metamora), died Tuesday, December 26, 2017.

Leo was born May 23, 1926 in Detroit to parents David and Mary (Przybylowicz) Winey. Mr. Winey proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he earned 2 bronze stars. He married Bernice Margaret Kaminski on September 27, 1952 in Detroit, and they remained married for over 61 years until Bernice’s death in 2014. Leo worked for General Motors in the Cadillac Division for 42 years, working through the ranks to become a master mechanic in the executive garage when he retired. Leo and Bernice raised their family in Redford Township and lived there until they moved to Metamora in 1991. He was a talented artist and enjoyed many wonderful “hobbies” including: woodworking, clock making, sandblasting/frosting glass and mirrors and making stained glass tiffany style lamps. He also took hardened paint clumps, he gathered from the assembly line paint troughs, to make unique multicolored pieces of jewelry. Mr. and Mrs. Winey sold these treasures at arts and crafts shows all around the area. Leo was a ‘jack of all trades’ and actually the master of almost all of them. He loved to sing, was an ace mechanic, and loved to spend time with his family…whom he cared for deeply.

Leo is survived by his children: Janet (Kelly) Mynes of Lapeer, Michael (Sandy Vernon) Winey of Pinrose, Colorado and Donald (Wendy Hardt) Winey of Okemos; grandchildren: James, Mandy, Jason, Kelly Jr., Rachel and Jessica; great-grandchildren: Jordan, Jaxon, Kelliann, Jevin, Milo, Dalorian, Stephen, Tony, Tristan, Megan and Luke; brother: Daniel Winey of Northville; and sister: Marion Albert of Milford. He was preceded in death by his loving wife: Bernice Winey; his parents; sisters: Genevieve Beutner, Evelyn Robinson and Dolores Gohlke; and his superhero watchdog, Doupy.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517.
