Obituary for Franklin LaVerne Garman

Franklin LaVerne Garman, age 85, of Lapeer, died Wednesday, September 26, 2018. He was born June 27, 1933 in Bronson, Michigan, the oldest child of LaVerne and Florence (Carr) Garman.

Mr. Garman attended Marshes Corners grade school in Gilead Township and Bronson High School, graduating in 1950. He attended Michigan State University until he was drafted into military service, receiving basic and advanced training at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. In December 1953 he was sent to Germany for 16 months and was discharged from the U.S. Army in May of 1955. On July 29, 1956 he was united in marriage to Marilyn Lucille Hicks in Hamilton, Indiana. Frank joined the Michigan State Police in 1956, he served at Posts in Flint, Jonesville, Calumet and Lapeer. He was a Sergeant at the Lapeer State Police Post from 1970 until his retirement in 1981. Mr. and Mrs. Garman owned and operated Marilyn’s Cake Decorating Supplies in Lapeer from 1977-1989. He worked for Lapeer County Bank and Trust as a courier from 1990-2000, when he retired for a second time.

Frank was a devoted and active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapeer, he served in many capacities: on many committees, the administrative board, light and sound operator, usher and usher coordinator. He was active in the March of Dimes for seven years and also the Muscular Dystrophy Association, working with his wife on many fund raising projects. In 1981 Franklin joined the Lapeer Lions Club, where he was very active…. he held many offices in the club, serving as president from 1991-1992. Mr. Garman was honored by the Lion’s Club with the Melvin Jones Fellowship during the 1999-2000 year.

Mr. Garman is survived by his children: Debra (Wayne) Wesenick of Clio and Andrew (Machelle) Garman of Lapeer; grandchildren: Kristin Wesenick, Amanda Garman and Tiffany Garman; great-granddaughter: Mariah Garman; and sister: Janice (Steve) Sechrist of Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife: Marilyn Garman; son: Brian L. Garman; daughter: Corinne "Connie" Jackson; grandsons: Kyle Jackson and Brian A. Garman; his parents; and brother: Dennis Garman.

Visitation will be 1-5PM Sunday, September 30, 2018, at Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer and 10-11AM Monday, October 1, 2018, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapeer. Frank’s funeral service will be 11AM Monday, October 1, 2018, at Trinity United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Grant Lobb.
