
George Albert Martin, age 97, of Lapeer, died Monday, November26, 2018. He was born July 9, 1921 in Detroit, to George and Alice (Taylor) Martin.
George graduated from Wilbur Wright School for Boys in Detroit, before it became coed in the 1957-1958 school year. Mr. Martin proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II. After returning home, he worked as a merchant marine for Ford Motor Company. Eventually, George took a job with Michigan Bell Telephone and worked in the Lapeer area as a telephone installer. Mr. Martin was a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor at the Boys Club in Lapeer (Henley Center), he loved to be in the water. George was part of the Lapeer County Sheriff Dive Team and taught many members of the Sheriff’s Dive Team “underwater search and recovery skills”. Mr. Martin was a life guard at Lake Ann Baptist Camp near Traverse City and Lake Minnawanna at the Metamora-Hadley State Recreation Area. He was also a member of American Legion Post #16.
George is survived by his children: Robert (Dorothy) Martin of Lapeer, William (Margaret) Martin of Swartz Creek, Carol (Charles) Nuñez of Perry, Marilyn Martin of Frankenmuth, Wayne Martin of Tampa, Florida and Brand (Callene) Martin of Lapeer; step-daughters: Chariti Hill-Withey of Edmore, Michigan and Mindi Hill of Edmore, Michigan; many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife: Shirley Martin; second wife: Kathy “Tappy” Martin; and siblings: Hilda Lawrence and Arthur Martin.
