Obituary for Gregory Levi Clark

Gregory L. Clark, age 74, of Metamora, died Friday, January 4, 2019.

He was born in Saginaw, Michigan on March 11, 1944 to Levi Keefer Clark and Mary Anne Knibbee. As a youngster, Gregory lost his father in battle, fighting for our country during World War II. Mr. Clark graduated in 1962 from Dryden High School.

In 1962, Gregory was employed by Pontiac Motors in Pontiac, Michigan, at the time he was eighteen years of age. There he worked as a semiskilled tradesman, until he retired in 1992 with 30 years of service. Mr. Clark was hired in 1965 by Sheriff Kenneth Parks as a member of the first Reserve Deputy Unit for the Lapeer County Sheriff Department. Gregory worked as a Lapeer County Deputy until 1971, when he was hired by Chief Wayne Hildebrandt when they established the Metamora Township Police Department. He worked his way through the ranks of Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant and then in 1995 Gregory was promoted to Assistant Police Chief of Metamora Township Police Department. Mr. Clark worked for 46 years for the Metamora Police Department, retiring in December 2010. On March 28, 1995 he received special recognition by Lapeer County Law Enforcement for 24 years of service, 6 of that with the Lapeer County Sheriff Department reserves. In August 2006 he received “Life Saving Recognition” from the Metamora Township Police Department for his quick actions, saving the lives of two people involved in a domestic dispute.

Mr. Clark is survived by his wife: Sharon Clark (he married Sharon Spinner Headley on February 14, 1976 at Oakwood Community Church); Gregg had children: four natural and the honor of adopting as his own: Loralynn Ann (Tony) Maresh, Lorie (Rusty) Bonner, Gregory (Lisa) Clark and Thomas (Lisa) Clark; 16 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; son-in-law: David Knapp; siblings: Daniel Smith, Patrick (Linda) Smith, Maureen (Brian) Chandler and Sarah (Smitty) Smith; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his Mother: Mary Anne Clark Smith; Father: Levi Keefer Clark; and daughter: Kathryn Lynn Knapp.

Visitation will be 4-8PM Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer and 10-11AM Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Grace Episcopal Church in Lapeer. Gregg’s funeral service will be 11AM Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at Grace Episcopal Church, 735 West Nepessing St., Lapeer, MI 48446. The Reverends Sarah and Larry Parks will officiate the service, with burial to follow in Metamora Twp. Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church.
