Obituary for Mary Frances Downey

Mary Frances Downey, 79, a lifetime Lapeer resident, died Saturday, June 9, 2018.

Mary was born July 24, 1938 in Flint, daughter to Walter and Martha (Parham) Redmond. Mary graduated from Lapeer High School, class of 1956. She married Gregory Downey on November 2, 1963 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Lapeer. Mary was a graduate of the University of Michigan. She was an elementary school teacher for Lapeer Community Schools. After Philip was born, Mary took time off from her teaching career to raise her family. Eventually she went back to work as a substitute with Lapeer Schools. Mary was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party. In 1972, she was the first female to run for Lapeer County Commission – she lost the election. Mary was an avid reader and loved camping and good glass of wine. She loved hiking and was a member of the Sierra Club for over 25 years.

Mary is survived by her children: Martha Downey of San Francisco, CA, Philip (Lorie) Downey of Lapeer and Steven Downey of Lapeer, granddaughter, Bethany McBride of Holly; siblings: JoAnn Woodrow of Lapeer and Richard Redmond of San Francisco, CA. Mary is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gregory Downey and her parents.

The Downeys are hosting a Celebration of Life/80th Birthday for Mary on July 24, 2018 from 1-4PM at the American Legion Post #16, 1701 West Genesee Street, Lapeer, Michigan 48446.
